Modern Rugs

Modern rugs are made on looms made of wood or iron. The looms for modern rugs consist of two vertical poles with two horizontal bars across. Cotton threads are stretched across the looms vertically to form the foundation for modern rugs making.

Some modern rugs also have wool and silk warps. Modern rugs are made by the weavers tying colored yarn to the warp and cutting it with a knife.

The main process in modern rugs’ making is tying and cutting process that goes on and on in rows and gradually the given pattern begins to emerge. After each row of knots are woven, modern rugs are beaten down with the comb to impart solidity and thickness to the pile then more rows of knots are woven and the process goes on until the piece is completed.

An average modern rugs weaver can tie around 10,000 knots per working day. A worker tying 10,000 knots each day will take over two months to make modern rugs.

After the knotting is completed the carpet is taken off the loom then the stage of washing and finishing of modern rugs comes. Washing not only cleans the modern rugs of all dirt but adds sheen and luster to it.
